Big Sur
Fall 2024
We left the Bay Area around 10:30am. It was sunny, but as reached Monterey the skies started to get cloudy. Luckily as we continued down Highway 1 it cleared up. We got to the Boronda Trailhead around 1:30pm, and loaded up our packs. They were heavier than normal because there's no water available on the trail or campground, so we had to carry it up ourselves. We each brought 5 liters, so a total of 22 pounds of just water.
The beginning of the hike was pretty steep, but was lined with pretty flowers and had great views of the coastline. We were hoping the elevation would let up, but it maintained for the entire hike. Midway through the hike we broke through the flowers and were in direct sun. We didn't rush, and took several breaks along the way to enjoy the rolling golden hills and rehydrate.
After about 3 hours we made it to Timber Top camp, which was fully empty. I walked around the campsite, but most of the views were obstructed by the surrounding trees. We ended up setting before the gate entrance, next to the hill. At this site we had the sweeping views of the clouds and ocean, with the coastline.
Kio was relaxing after drinking some water, trying to catch flies and we set up camp. It was quiet and peaceful, and we relaxed in our chairs eating sour patch kids and rehydrating. During sunset we made biscuits and gravy for dinner, which turned out well except for a bit of crunchy sausage.
Once the sun set, it became a bit chilly. The flies left, and we could hear the quiet of the night. I noticed my shadow on the ground, and realized that the moon was almost full. It was so bright I could see the landscape without any trouble - it felt like there was a lamppost somewhere. The night wasn't too cold so we slept through peacefully.
The next morning, we packed up and enjoyed some scambled eggs for breakfast. Then we started the hike down, which was a bit slippery since it was so steep. As we were descending, we saw a helicopter and two planes (I think seaplanes) fly below us, which was an insane feeling. About midway through, it got foggy as we entered the clouds which was nice since we got a break from the sun. Eventually we broke out of it at the other end, and eventually reached the car where we had more water waiting for us.
All in all it was a great weekend trip, although slightly strenuous. But the views made it worth it.
